Congratulations to Djeneba Aduayom who was selected as our JewelryArts24 winner

About the artist

After a career as a professional dancer, Djeneba Aduayom progressed into photography and brought her love of movement and emotive performance into her imagery and subsequent directing work.

Drawing inspiration from her multicultural heritage, Aduayom’s concepts and artistic expression are rooted in personal exploration of the inner worlds that reside in her imagination as a direct and instinctual result of her experience of the existing world. In looking within and articulating creative ideas in a visual abstraction that beckons interpretation, she hopes her works allow the outside viewer to travel to a universe of their very own making.

Aduayom is based in Southern California.

Artist statement

In my creative practice I explore visual parallels of reality and fantasy. For this project I was called to produce a trauma response to the deteriorating health of our planet.

As our collective actions and inactions continue to destroy our world and resources, the nature of this reality we live in today is brutal. Titled “Atmospheric Perspective”, this piece is simply a poetic vision of what we are transforming our planet into.

To depict the feeling of the Earth melting and rising levels of toxicity in the air, I used a combination of various technologies to animate a series of still images into a video piece I then projected within an immersive installation space. Here I ask what will be left of us once we are gone—Mere installations that might offer a testament of our past presence?.. Or, perhaps, nothing at all—Only a scorched planet haunted by distant memories and false illusions? My hope is the viewer experiences their own perceptual sensations when looking at this work and is compelled to do their part to protect this planet we call home.

Experience the piece in person

The JA24 exhibition at Silo London will be an immersive, multi-screen installation that sets the stage for a series of encounters inviting guests to experience Aduayom’s work alongside exclusive food pairings from this zero-waste restaurant Silo.  The immersive exhibition will run from October 9-12.

JewelryArts24 – a Digital Art Competition

Called on artists, students, industry, and creatives in general to create a piece of digital art using data from the State of the Art Summit

The Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), Mineralogical & Geological Museum Harvard University (MGMH) and the Gemological Institute of America (GIA)have come together again,  following from the State of the Art Summit in June 2023 where they examined the future of responsible jewellery on campus at Harvard.  One of the outcomes of that day was a call to involve more young people, storytelling and to educate society more deeply with data, art, and science about the importance of responsible practices within the jewellery industry and wider world.

To do that, we launched a competition called JewelryArts24 calling on artists, students, industry, and creatives in general to create a piece of digital art using data from the summit, expanding the message from that day to a global audience.  The winning artwork called Atmospheric Perspective by artist Djeneba Aduayom, has been selected and will be displayed during Frieze London in October 2024, a grant has also been awarded, and Nataal Creative Studio will represent Djeneba Aduayom  commercially going forward.
