Interview

In Conversation With…Erdal Barlak, GustoGold

Erdal Barlak is Partner at Gusto Gold. The Gusto Gold journey started 30 years ago as Özname Jewelry where they produced casting items. They have since become one of the leading companies in the gold sector.

What drove Gusto Gold to join the RJC?

Gusto Gold joined the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) to demonstrate its commitment to ethical, social, and environmental practices. Being a member of the RJC symbolises our dedication to responsible sourcing, sustainability, and transparency. We had already been implementing these standards within our company, and as an RJC member, we had the opportunity to connect with like-minded companies, which allowed us to advance our business further through networking and collaboration.

How do you think sustainability is transforming the jewellery industry?

Sustainability is significantly transforming the jewellery industry by emphasising transparent supply chains, ethical sourcing practices, and environmental responsibility. Consumers are increasingly demanding jewellery that is ethically sourced and sustainable. These expectations compel companies to implement standards that align with these demands, not only for the growth of our company but also to remain competitive in international markets.

Do you think there has been a shift in the way sustainability is understood in our industry?

There has certainly been a noticeable shift in the jewellery industry as the importance of sustainability has become more widely recognised. Companies are realising that integrating sustainable practices into their operations is not just a trend but a fundamental value that aligns with consumer preferences and global responsibilities. Greater focus on sustainability in jewellery design and production is essential.

How have you implemented responsible business practices into your daily operations?

When we integrate responsible business practices into our daily operations, we ensure the traceability of our supply chain and source materials ethically. These practices are an integral part of our commitment to sustainability and ethical standards.

What is the most exciting thing about working in the jewellery industry?

The most exciting aspect of working in the jewellery industry is the opportunity to be part of creating meaningful and lasting pieces that hold emotional value for consumers. This creative and dynamic industry not only offers avenues for innovation and expression but also contributes to personal stories. Seeing our products worn by consumers around the world is a unique source of joy for us.

Do you have any interesting projects coming up?

We are actively working on exciting projects aimed at continuously improving our sustainable practices, supporting social initiatives, and refreshing our product offerings. While we cannot disclose specific details at this time, we remain committed to consistently enhancing ethical and sustainable practices within the jewellery industry. We will continue to approach our work with an innovative mindset, present our customers with new ideas, and push boundaries with our ongoing projects.
