Interview

In Conversation With…Prashant Patel, Samarth Diamonds

Prashant Patel is a partner at Samarth Diamond, a prominent manufacturer of small-size round brilliant-cut diamonds. He received training at his father’s factory, which allowed him to deeply understand the core values of the business and build strong connections with the employees. Founded by Dinesh Patel, Prashant’s father, Samarth Diamond benefits from Prashant’s oversight of sales operations in India under his father’s guidance.

What drove Samarth Diamond to join the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC)?

As manufacturers of small round brilliant cut diamonds ranging from 1.00mm to 3.00mm, we are committed to excellence in both our products and our business practices. Recognizing the importance of sustainable and compliant operations, we applaud the efforts of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) in leading the charge. When we embarked on the journey towards sustainability at Samarth Diamond, integrating RJC principles was our foremost priority. Understanding that a strong foundation is essential for international success, we recognized RJC as our gateway to expanding our reach and reputation. Through their guidance, we’ve established robust systems and identified numerous avenues for enhancement, positioning us for growth while upholding ethical standards in our industry.

Do you have any upcoming projects or special initiatives that we should keep an eye out for?

We’re actively engaged in our journey towards achieving carbon neutrality, a significant project that underscores our commitment to environmental sustainability. Currently, we’ve made substantial strides, with 75-80% of our manufacturing facility’s electricity consumption in Gujarat being met through renewable sources, including solar (900 KW) and wind (1.5 MW) energy. Our ambitious goal is to attain carbon neutrality by 2030, recognizing both the challenges and opportunities inherent in this pursuit. Despite the obstacles that lie ahead, we’re energised and enthusiastic about advancing this initiative, demonstrating our dedication to reducing our carbon footprint and fostering a greener future.

At Samarth Diamond, we firmly believe in our corporate responsibility to contribute positively to society. That’s why we’ve proudly embraced the Navdeep Vidhya Mandir school in North Gujarat as part of our commitment to giving back. With approximately 450 eager young learners enrolled, we’re not just providing financial support but also dedicating our time and energy to make a meaningful impact. Our approach is comprehensive, emphasizing both skill-building and instilling strong values. By nurturing these children with a holistic education, we aim to equip them to navigate the world with integrity and purpose, ensuring they lead lives grounded in enduring values.

What does sustainability mean to you, and how does it link to Samarth Diamond?

At Samarth Diamond, we embrace the interconnectedness of all beings within the universe, understanding that every action and choice we make has an impact through time and space. This profound awareness underscores our unwavering commitment to sustainability. We recognize that each participant in the supply chain plays a crucial role in fostering a healthier and more harmonious world. Through our collective efforts, we aim to contribute to a future where we are not just sustainers but champions of progress, ensuring that each passing day brings us closer to a brighter, purer existence.

How have sustainability initiatives transformed the industry?

Sustainability initiatives have catalysed a shift in mindset among industry leaders, prompting them to explore additional measures to benefit both people and the environment. As these leaders embrace sustainability practices, their influence trickles down, inspiring companies at all levels to prioritize compliance, uphold fundamental human rights, and adhere to local laws. Manufacturing firms, like ours, are no exception. We’re closely observing the footsteps of industry pioneers, diligently integrating their practices into our operations, one step at a time. Organizations such as the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC) play a pivotal role in this transformation, and we’re proud to join hands with them on this transformative journey.
